SHANNON CO-OP. DAIRY COMPANY.
ANNUAL MEETING. The 21st annual meeting of suppliers of the (Shannon Co-Operative Dairy Company, Ltd., was held at Shannon on (Saturday, Mr, W. E. Barber presiding in the unavoidable absence of Mr. R. W. Taylor. (Speaking to the minutes of the last annual meeting, Mr. G. Barber said that he had then moved that it be a recommendation to the directors to consider that the factory be changed over £o|r cheesy manufacture, instead of butter. However, lie was now convinced that, unless a difference of 3d per lb could be obtained for cheese, it was useless to change over, and he was satisfied that the company was on the right lines in continuing to manufacture butter.
In congratulating the shareholders upon another successful year, the chairman said that there had been many dijfficulties to overcome during that pegiod. One had 'been the transporting of cream by the punt between Shannon and Moutoa, but happily, the new bridge over the Manawatu River, had overcome that problem, in addition to lessening the mileage of cartage. Also, there would now be little or no danger of supplies being held up through floods. iThejre had been an increase in the manufacture of 119 tons during the year, and this was a great advance when the size of the factory was . considered. Monthly payments had been made for all ,grades -of butter-fat.and had averaged 17.92'fid. Provision was made for a further payment of 15-16 d per lb. on the season’s supplies, which would bring the average payment fotr all grades of butter-fat up to 19.238. The store had shown a proifit of !£924 17/9, and the year’s working had been very satisfactory. Mr. G. H. 'Stiles stressed the point that the company had .made as big an advance each month as was possible, and added that it would be appreciated that it was better to do so than to have a little extra payment at the end of the year. Possibly, a little more could have been advanced, but it would be found at the end of the season that the Shannon factory was again near the top with its payouts, as had been the ease in the past. The factory had been well managed, but suppliers did not always appreciate the difficulties the directors had in making satisfactory sales. Last year they had taken advantage of the high prices offering, instead of maiking consignments. Mr. (Stiles stated that lie believed in making a good sale when it was possible, rather than to adhere to a definite consignment policy.
Expressing the opinion that the working expenses had been kept down to a minimum, Mr. G. Barber said that all would be well satisfied with the season’s results, and that the shareholders were to be congratulated upon the returns they had received.
In seconding the motion for the adoption of the report and balancesheet, moved by the chairman, Mr. J. IClhrystall stated that the cost of manufacture compared more than favourably with other factories’ costs; and it would mean that suppliers to the Shannon factory received Id per lb. premium on their buttofr-fat as a result of good management. One thing that was very pleasing was the loyalty that existed between the' shareholders and the factory staff. ' The report and balance-sheet (as previously published) were then adopted. As an appreciation of the work of the staff during the past year, and in view of the fact that the company had reached its twentyfirst year of trading, it was decided to pay the staff a bonus of 5 per cent, on their yea/r’s salaries.
Mr. R. J. Thompson, who moved the proposal, said that the company should show in a tangible manner that the services of the staff were fully appreciated, and it would be recognised that the success of the company in the past had been very largely due to the co-operation and loyalty of the staff. Messrs G. H. Stiles and :R. J. Law were elected directors. The retiring directors were Messrs Stiles and W. James, while T. Gardner was also a candidate for office. i
At a subsequent meeting of directors, Mr. R. W. Taylor was reelected chairman.
