ST. MARY’S CHURCH
SOCIAL EVENING. * A social evening was held in the Convent schoolroom on Thursday evening’when the Foxton parishioners welcomed Father McDermott home from his ( trip to England and Ireland, and farewelled Father Brennan who relieved Father McDermott during the latter’s absence. hllr. Bergin expressed the pleasure of the parishioners at the return of Father McDermott hale and hearty, and renewed in vigour to carry ,on his duties in Poston and assured him that it was the desire of his charges that he would long Ibe spared to fulfil his duties in Poston. He then said that he had a more unpleasant duty to -perform, namely to say farewell to Father Brennan, who had performed his priestly duties in a manner which had endeared him to all his people and won their admiration. They hoped that if in the course of time, Father, McDermott had to leave Frtxton that Father Brennan would return to assume control of this parish. On behalf of the congregation;.he. ipres'ented Father Brennan with "a cheque. ‘ On rising to respond Father Brennan was greeted with applause. He thanked the people for their generosity and for the manner in which they had come along to say farewell. Ho interpreted their ' action as being a tribute to the priesthood rather than as a personal tiibute. He . had enjoyed every minute of his stay in Foxton and nothing would iplease him better if the Bishop, in the future, should see fit. fo place him in chnjrgie of this parish. He spoke at some length upon the priesthood and the intimate relationship existing between a Catholic priest and his parishioners. Finally he thanked the people for their generosity and wished them well in all their undertakings. Father McDermott, also respon- , (led feelingly and said lie was happy to be bach in Foxton and to meet his old friends. He thanked the people for their kindness to him in the past and promised to do his utmost to prove worthy of the 'trust which had been reposed 1 in him.
