PROTECTION ON HARES

The question of making further representations to the Acclimatisation Society for. the removal of the protection on hares in the Board’s district was again brought up at the monthly meeting of the Manawatu Rabbit Board on Thursday. Trustee Grammar said that hares Avere particularly numerous and doing a considerable amount of damage in the Board’s district. He knew of a farmer in his district AA'ho had planted out 700 trees and all of them Avere nipped off by lores. 'They Avere very plentiful in the swampy localities. When he was passing over his own property the other day he counted 12 hares blit only suav two rabbits. Trustee MdKelvie said he found it velry difficult to find a single hare on his property. He Avas in the habit of hunting them and guaranteed to keep them down on any property by this method. The board decided not to take any further action in the matter as it was considered pra/ctieally impossible to get the protection removed.
