NEWS AND NOTES.
A local resident received a letter from an erstwhile resident of Wanganui, now residing in San Francisco by recent mail (says the Herald). Writing on June 20, she says: “We ha.ve just finished reading the fearful alccount of the Hunterville earthquake when most distressing cables reach us of another most disastrous earthquake —-2000 persons unaccounted for, towns razed, mountains sliding' half a anile.”
The Rev. Father John Dowling, of flue teaching staff of St. Bede’s College, has been appointed rector of iSt. Patriclk’s College, Wellington. The Rev. Father J. W. Dowling, S.M., M.A., like his predecessor (the late Rev. Father Ryan) is a New Zealander. He was born in 1889, and received his early education at the Stratford High School. After matriculating he entered the Government, service, and was appointed to a position in the Treasury Department. During his period of service with the Government he entered Victoria University College, where he completed a section of lus 8.A., degree. He decided to enter St. Mary’s Seholastieatc, Gtreenniieadows, in 1909, and was ordained priest in 1916. He worked in the parish of Napier till his appointment to the staff of St. Bede’s College, Christchurch, in 1920. Since then he has laboured with distinction at 'St. Bede’S iOollege as a senior master. He is keenly interested in sport, and occupied the position of coach to the St, Bede’s College senior Rugby football team,
