AUSTIN BANNER AND EASTON CUP COMPETITION.
FOXTON (12) v. OHAU (3). On Saturday on Easton Park the two leading 1 teams in the above competition tried conclusions. Ohau won. the toss and played with the sun. . Foxton kicked off and found the line and from the line-out the bail was given to Walls who line kic'ked to within a few yards of the opposing team’s line and a forcedown followed. From the twentylive kick the local forwards took the hall at their toe; and finally Lee succeeded in picking it up and scored —the kick failed. Foxton 3 -—Ohau nil. Foxfoni again took the offensive from the kick off but the visitors cleared '.from a free kick. Frojm the line-out the Foxton backs went into action and from an infringement Walls took a drop kick, but it was unsuccessful, the ball being taken by Paul, who made a dash down the line. A line-out and a serum followed. From the latter the opposing backs took the ball hut George was taken 'by Croon and Foxton, with a kick, again took the offensive. Coley attempted to pot but failed, and Ohau cleared. An exchange of kicks followed from which Ohau gained ground and took play to Foxton’s 25, where, from a line-out Ohau hacks handled ’the ball well, but the movement was lost by Paul knocking on near Foxton’s line. Now the Foxton defence was called upon and cleared through Walls intercepting, and making a good run only to he taken by Ellison. Ohau were given a free kick for obstruction and cleared to the line. 'Shortly afterwards George, made a run from half-way hut again dropped the hall. From the scrum Ohau got the ball hut the movement was stopped by iColey w T ho intercepted and made a good, run upfield, and kicked over the full-back’s head. Ohau quickly recovered and cleared with a line kick. From two free kicks Foxton made ground and from a scrum hooked the hall. A line-out a yard froim the opposing line fol-lowed-HCroon took the ball and dived over, the kick failed. Foxton 6 —Ohau nil. The /remainder of thiis half again saw Foxton pressing when, the whistle blew.
During the first five minutes of the second half Ohau succeeded in getting to within 10 yards of the local line but Hutchins cleared. Paul took the hall and made a good ken to the /visitors’ half foiling ball was knocked on and from the scrum in 'Foxton’s 25 Hutchins again cleared and the play was taken to the visitors half forcing Hogg to line kick. From the lineout Ohau. pressed, hut 'Coley cleared with a line 'kick. From this lineout (Brown took the hall to within 5 yards of the Foxton line. Again the Ohau hacks handled the hall but George again mulled, and Foxton took . the play down Held. Coley now made a. .run and was taken by Ellison. Ohau cleared from a free kick. From a scrum in front of the Ohau goal, Cannont was given the hall and dived over the line —the kick failed. Foxton 9 —Ohau nil. From the kiiek-off the hall came dross field to Paul who made a good run down the side line and scored. The kick from the side line failed. Foxton 9—Ohau 3. The last three minutes saw very willing play on both sides. Foxton making good ground were rewarded with an additional thjree points, scored by Croon. Foxton 12- —Ohau 3. A. Rouse controlled the game. At the reception in the school Mr. Mason welcomed the visitors and as there was some dissatisfaction with regard- to the refereeing he remarked that such was extremely difficult owing to the similarity in the eoloujrs of the. jerseys and expressed the opinion that in no wav was either' side favoured. The game being very well controlled. Reference was made to playing the game in the coiTeet spirit, some hoys at times being liable to allow excessive keenness to overrule their judgments. He closed with congra',tula,ting the visitors on the brilliant exhibition they, had given such being a credit ito all concerned. I Mr. Connor on behalf of Ohau .replied thanking the girls for their part of the tnorhing’s operation. The reception closed with cheers for the girls and the young teachers, Misses Cflroiwe and Yorke who had so ably supervised. The teams were -as follows:—' Ohau. —Ellison, Paul, Pnra.wiki, Elliott, 'Wjehipahnna, George, Hogg, Paipa, Brown, Martin, Rowland, Gibson, Raipa, Wehipahana, Poutana. Foxton.—Martin, Walls, Coley, Cannont, Pirentice, Hutchins, Bills, Croon, Easton, Wilson, Devonshire, Lee, Neville, Maearthy, Newton.
SATURDAY'S RESULT'S. SENIORS. Poston 25 V; Hui Mai 9. Wanderers 17 v. Shannon 6. The final round of the senior championship was played on Saturday afternoon, when Foxton defeated Hui Mai at Mianakau by th« comfortable margin of 25 points to .9 and Wanderers defeated Shannon at Shannon by 17 points to 6. As a -result of these two games. Wanderers and Foxton tie at the head of the oha’mpionship table and a replay between these two teams null be necessary. JUNIOR GAME. FOXTON DEFEAT WANDERERS. Levin Wanderers and Foxton juniors met on Easton Park on Saturday and after a ragged display in which there was little good
football shown, .the local tenrifittwl an easy win by 14 points to nil. The first spell was fairly evenly contested, Dunn scoring the only fry after a forward rush and Willip.ms r 'averting.
Foxton had their opponents defending’ during the whole of the second spelt and crossed, the line three times. Williams heat half the hacks to scope a good try; Newth scored from a passing rush and Hartley and Croon engineered a. good blind slide try. None of the last three tries were converted and the game ended Foxton 14 —Levin Wanderers nil. Mr. McGregor refereed. There was much adverse comment from the spectators on the turnout of-the (visiting team, only half of them being in correct football dress. The remainder adopted shirts! of various hues, singlets, etc. Stockings were missing an many eases and towards the finish of the game several playdrs were practically divested of all clothes except shorts. The juniors will train at the shed to-night and Thursday at 7 p.m.
WAIRARAPA RETAINS RiANFURLY SHIELD. ■Q Wiairarapa retained possession of the Ranfurly Shield by defeating the challengers (Hawke’s Bay) at Masterton on Saturday by 10 points to* 6. From the kick-off Wairarapa took play to the visitors’ line, - but Setford relieved with a good kick. Cooke cut- short the Hawke’s Bay offensive and play worked upfield, J. Donald breaking alway, hacked up by Randall Booth, who secured and scored a try within ten minutes of the commencement. Fuller converted. Wiairarapa s—o. Rujru was prominent in several Hawke’s Bay offensive movements, 'hut Roateh was handy and Wairarapa returned to the attack. From a free, kick to Hawke’s Bay, Rum flashed out on the side and the visitors’ hacks looked very dangerous, hut Roach saved. Not to be denied, however, tine visiting hacks again pressed and South opened their account with a try. Yates missed the kick. Wairarapa 5 —3. For the remainder of the spell Wairarapa were on the defensive. The Wairarapa backs -were -not handling too well and the 1 ' forwards also lacked sting. The visitors repeatedly pressed hard J. Donald being off-side in a . handy position gave Hawke’s Bay an opportunity to gain the lead. Ruru sending the hall between the posts—Hawke’s Bay fi —Wlairardtpa 5. s Opening play in the second half was very fast. Walker replaced Oliver iii this spell as hooker. Hawke’s Bay attacked, hut the shield holders’ defence was too sound, Roach and Gooke being most prominent- Eventually the Wiairarapa hacks picked ujp, the hall being handled by each one in turn, Hart securing from the serum and. sending to Mill, to Cooke, to Fuller, to Jury,; who scored in the most sensational movement of the day. Fuller converted amid a scene of much enthusiasm, placing the holders in the advantage. ’ .
Wairarapa then assumed the upper hand, both back's and forvalrds being superior to the visitors, who battled hard to reach their opponents’ line, but the defence was impenetrable. The closing stages resolved into a gruelling' forward struggle, the game ending without further score. Wairarapa 10 —Hawke’s Bay 6. Mr; J. Moffatt, of Wellnigton, was the referee.
SCHOOL COMPETITIONiS. A meeting of teachers was held at Levin on Saturday night in connection with the football competition of the district. Present: Messrs F. A. Mason (Chairman), Warwick, Procter, Chipper (iFoxton), O’Connor (Ohau), Jones and McDonald (Levin). It was decided to .close the competition. next Saturday, Foxton playing Levin and 'Shannon playing Ohau. At present Foxton are leading- by two points from Ohau. The North (Shannon-Foxton) combined v. South (Levin, Ohau, Otaki, Manakau) match was set down to be played at Levin on Saturday, August 19 th. On Wednesday, August 14th, the soven-a-side competition for the Noad Shield will be played at Levin. - In conjunction with this, a girls' basket-ball competition —6 aside, -will be played,- thus making it a real sports afternoon. As he is leaving the district, the bon. secretary, Mr. • McDonald, handed in Ihlis resignation which was accepted with regret. Messrs Mason, Connor, Jones -and Procter all spoke in laudatory terms of Mr. McDonald who suitably replied. Be was accorded musical honours.
