HOSPITAL PATIENT RUNS AMOK.
ATTACKS NIGHT WATCHMAN. Waimate, Last Night. Attired in pyjamas and with his feet bare a madman ran amok in the rain which drenched Waimate in the dead hours of this morning. His capture necessitated desperate means for he was a powerfully built man. *■ He was an inmate of the Waimate public hospital and was seen to leave about 2.30 a.m. The police were informed 'and after a long search he was discovered ringing the bell of the (Catholic Church. Besides the police several others weire attracted to the spot by the piolonged.bell ringing and realising that the man was dangerous they rushed him and after a long struggle overpowered him. He was then taken to the lock-up. Between the time lie escaped from the hospital and the ringing of the hell the man encountered the watchman of the C.F.C.A. premises whom lie chased and fought. The watchman was struck on the head with his own torch which the man had grabbed and would have been in a bad way if the man bad not ceased the assault and suddenly left him. The man, who is aged 23, has been committed to the Sunnyside Mental hospital.
