RUGBY FOOTBALL.
At .Wanganui yesterday Palmerston North High School defeated Wanganui 'Collegiate School in a close scoring game by 14 'points to 10. A crowd of about 2000 watched the match. 'The first half .was in favour of Palmerston, while the latter half was decidedly in favour of Collegiate School.

LAST-MINUTE VICTORY. , „ Alanawhenua. representatives played their fijrs’t game of the season at 'Palmerston North yesterday afternoon, when they suffered a last-iminute defeat at the hands of Wairarapa. .The game in the first half was not velry impressive, and although Manawhenua were dominant practically throughout they could score but 10 points. Wairarapa. were below form in the 'first half, and although their forwards gave their hacks innumerable opportunities they were not able to score. After half-time, however, the hacks went much better, and, thanks to Stills’s excellent display at first five-eighth, they were able to win. the match just before the cessation of play. The Mannwhenua forwards battled hard throughout, more than holding their own, and it was the indifferent display. of itheir baicks that gave the visitors victory. 'The teams were as follow:
Wlairai'apa.— Henderson, Burgess, 'Booth, Jury, F. Fullei’, .J. Mill, Hart, Devine, McGregor, Walker, Pairbrother, S. Willoughby, G. Willoughby, Oliver, Irvine (captain). Mama whenua.I—Johnson, 1 —Johnson, Strange, Fletcher, Taylor, 'Sevan, Ormond, W. Patrata, Dalzell, T. Parsons, Satherley, Tatana ((captain), Miles, Conrad, Pratt, Boldt. Taylor, Parsons and Boldt participated in a passing bout, and the last nanped, although brought to earth, regained possession to score a good try, which Tatana converted. Manawhenua s—Wairarapa nil. A Wairarapa passing bout was in prog/bess when Fletcher intercepted a mulled ball and kicked over Henderson’s head. Dalzell, who was well up with the play, won the race to the ball, and scored in a handy position. Tatana. had no difficulty in converting, and halftime sounded with Manawhenua loading by 10 points to 0. Wairarapa changed their tactics after the resumption of play, and Manawhenua had to force down for the first time in the 'match. Not to he denied, Wairalrapa had their efforts ’rewarded when Oliver threw the .bail to Jury, who raced across in the corner. Fuller’s kick missed. Manawhenua 10 —Wairarapa 3. Good work on the light 'wing between Johnson and Strange threatened the Wairarapa line until Manawhenua were penalised. Wairarapa returned to the attack, and M. Willoughby capped a forward movement by scoring, well out. Fuller failed with the kick. Manawhenua. 10 —Wairarapa 6. Off-side play by the Manawhenua forwards gave Fuller an opportunity to kick a penalty goal, his kick sailing over the cross-bar to reduce Afanawhenua’s advantage to one point. After two unsuccessful attacks on the left wing Wairarapa tried the other side, and Burgess went over after Hart, Mill, Fuller and Booth had handled. Henderson failed with the kicik, and immediately after the final bell sounded. Wairarapa 12 —Manawhenua 10. Mr. J. J. O’Connor refereed. ALL BLACKS DEFEAT COUNTRY TEAM. The New Zealand Rugby team defeated the combined country team, at Armidale yesterday by 27 points to 8. The visitors were superior to the home side in combination and condition. The handling of the ball by the All Blacks thrilled the crowd. •RESULTS OF MATCHES.
