FOXTON RACING CLUB
ANNUAL REPORT. The following is the report to he submitted to the annual meeting of the Foxton Racing Club, to be held in the Racing Club office on Friday evening, August 2nd: — “Your Comimittee has pleasure in presenting the report and balancesheet for the year ending 30th June, 1929, which shows a most satisfactory improvement upon recent years. It is pleasing to note that the Club has made a good financial recovery from the heavy difficulties under which, in common with other country cliibs, it has been labouring for some ye airs past. Although the profit disclosed on the year’s trading, naniely, £27 17/5, is small, it should be noted that the Committee has prudently written off depreciation amounting to £296 11/-. This is the first year since 1926 that the balance-sheet has disclosed a profit on the year’s work and the extent of the improvement can be gauged when the- result is compared with the two preceding years when we suffered losses of £222 13/1 and £448 13/9 respectively. The outstanding event during the year just closed was the Committee’s action in changing the dates of the annual race meeting, and I am sure that the result has justified that course. The sporting press, after expressing doubts as to the wisdom of such a step prior to our race meeting, unanimously applauded the 'change after the experiment had been put to the test and the racing public generally voted our last meeting to be one of the best on record.
The 'Club has 'been allotted Wednesday /arid Thursday, 15th and 16th January, 1930, as the dates for its next meeting. The course and buildings have been maintained in excellent repair and it is a matter for congratulation that locally,-trained horses have had a most successful season, which reflects credit upon the caretaker as well as the /Foxton trainers. During the year the Hon. Alinister of Internal Affairs visited Foxlon and expressed his appreciation of the local racecourse property and the manner in which it had been maintained. '* Unfortunately the Alilitary Department made arrangements to alter the location for artillery eamp3 last year and this change meant a less of £l2O lent to the Club. The Committee will not miss the opportunity of placing the racecourse at the disposal of the authorities if they should require it in future years.
The Foxton 'Sports Association Incorporated, and the Trustees of the racecourse property very kindly donated to the Club sums o-f £2O and £45 respectively, to be expended upon improvements to the course. The donations were gratefully acknowledged. It is with deep regret that I have to record the deaths during the year of the following members: —J. V. Robinson and W. Eparaima. The late Mr. Robinson was for ; some years prior to his death a member of the Committee and rendered valuable service in that capacity. Mr. C. A. Pearson, who left Foxton during the- year, resigned from the Committee. - Nominations have been received for the following positions:—. President: —Mr. W. E. Barber. Vice-Presidents:— Messrs R. Bryant, W. T. Jewell, H. Coley, C. E. Robinson. As there are no further nominations in regard to these officials, an election Avail -not be necessary. The following nominations were recei\'ed for Stewards: —Messrs M. B. Bergin, S. L. Jackson, J. Purcell, W. Kirkland, P. A. Lingard, A. Ross, L. C. Bryant. As there are 5 vacancies an election will be necessary.” The profit and loss account- for the year showed a balance of £27 17/5 after allowing £296 11/- for depreciation. Receipts were as fellow: —-Subscjriptions (members), £l2-2 17/-; totalisator, £2874 19/0; nominations and acceptances, £564 9/-; training fees, £2l 10/-, privileges, £999 8/-; hire loose boxes, £46 17/6; rents, £157 2/6. The expenditure comprised:—(Stakes, £2,370; salaries, £260 5/-; -wages, £lsl -2/-; attendance at meeting, £145 7/-; printing and advertising, £157 7/3; interest. £64 3/11; Government taxes, £577 12/2; le\ T ies, £SB 7/4; improvements, £177 3/6; maintenance and repairs, £6B 13/2; expenses, £252 5/1; rents, rates and insurance, £IBO 8/11. The liabilities are shoAvn to consist of -a (mortgage of £7OO, leaving a balance of -assets valued at £4136 1-6/11,
