EXPLOSION AT SEA.
NEAR FAREWELL SPIT. The Acting Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department has been advised as follows by the postmaster at Collingwood:— “Lighthouse keeper at PareAvell Spit reports that. at 2.15 p.m. on a. hea\ T y explosion occurred out at sea about a mile and a half northwest of Farelwell Spit. A huge column of Avater and black smoke shot into the air and then travelled very rapidly in the direction of French Pass, passing close to the lighthouse. Therejs no damage to the lighthouse. Various suggestions have been made in explanation of the reported explosion, but nothing authoritative can be said. There is nothing to connect it AV'ith the recent earthquakes. The most reasonable theory is that a mine laid during the war exploded. Another possibility is that a Avaterspout—Caused by a small tornado like those Avhich have been experienced recently in the north — Avas responsible, in combination Avlth a lightning discharge. —Post.
