MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL
ENGINEER’S REPORT. At Tuesday’s meeting of the Manawatu 'County Council the engineer (Mir. H. V. Bond) reported as follows: — Main Highways. —General grading and maintenance has been earlied out en all main highways. Metalling is proceeding on the Hi;ma-tangi-Sanson road. 200 cubic yards of metal has been spread on the Foxton-Shannon road. A new 12-inch concrete pipe -culvert was put in at Oroua Downs on the Hi-matangi-iSanson highway. Sanding is being carried out on Motuiti road and Poplar road has been graded. Foxton-Him'atangi Main Highways. —The general cleaning up and drainage of this road is progressing. Cuttings are being fascined and fillings strengthened. A wearing course of river-bed metal is being spread and grading is being continued.
Hi m a ta ngi-Rangio tu. —A total distance of 3 miles 52 chains lias been formed and metalled. This is approximately half the total distance. The recent rains have somewhat hampered this work. As soon as it is possible to work in the river bed, metal will be spread on the surface on the foundation and rolled in. This "work is still being carried out from both ends. TRAMWAY MANAGER’S REPORT.
The chief items of traffic for the month of June were: —Grain 13 tons; minerals and manure 767 general merchandise, 641 tons; cheese etc 7'i tons; stock, 29 trucks; eggs 217 crates; timber, 2,400 sup. ft; metal (from Terrace End), 7,664 cubic yards; from crusher, 1,555 cubic yards; wool 14 bales. The accounts showed a credit, balance of £276 10/6. RATE COLLECTOR’S REPORT. Since March 31st, arrears of rates amounting to £lßl 16/8 had been collected. The demands for current rates were well on the way and should be ready to post out early next week. If it was intended to again allow the rebate, the formal resolution is requii’ed to be passed at to-day’s meeting.—Decided to grant the usual rebate for prompt payment. RATE ROLL ALTERATIONS. TRAFFIC INSPECTOR’S REPORT 1 . The County Traffic Inspector (Mr. W. Berry) repotted as follows : As recommended by the Council, notices h'ave been sent under the Act. to t'he persons concerned to cut down trees at the corners of Rongotea-Longburn and FoxtonSanson roads and ait corner of Ha.niimond’s line and RongoteaLongburn road. One lorry driver, for carrying a greater load than that allowed undejr the regulations, was before the Court and fined £lO and costs. 'Two persons for allowing stock to wander were fined 10/- and 15/- each. An information against a ear drivelr for driving his ear in a manner dangerous to the public will be dealt with at Bulls Court on July 13. Buildii'g permits to the value of £,50 have been applied for and fees amounting to 5/- collected. Fines for breaches of motor regulations amounted to £lO and under by-laws £1 5/-. ___
