THE PALMERSTON NORTH RAILWAY DEVIATION.

Some time ago the local Chamber of Commerce wrote to the Prime Minister, endor-

sing his action in discontinuing the Palmerston North railway deviation and suggesting that the time was now opportune! for him to give serious consideration to the matter of linking up the Main Trunk line between Greatf olrd and Levin. At Thursday night’s meeting the Prime Minister replied as follows: “I am ii. receipt of your letter and am very pleased to learn that the Foxton (Chamber of Oomlmejrce endorses the action of the Government in discontinuing operations at the Palmerston North deviation. In the facq nf the whole facts of the case the Government would certainly not have been justified in taking -any other course. 1 note that -the Chamber requests that consideration be given to the question of linking up the main trunk- lino between Greatford -and Levin, and I shall he glad to bring the representations made in this connection under the notice of the Hon. the Minister of Public Works for his attention and consideration. I am afraid that I will not have an early opportunity of visiting Foxton, but should the opportunity present itself I shall )je only too pleased to meet, the residents of your district.” The letter was received.
