THE ARRIVAL OF THE S.S. HIMATANGI.
HIVE OF INDUSTRY AT LOCAL WIHAfeF.
The local waterfront presented a hive' of industry this morning due to the arrival at the Harbour Board’s wharf at 7 a.m. of the s.s. Himatangi with 300 tons of cargo from WjellingtoH: * Although the vessel berthed before the usual breakfast hour on board, the work of discharging was commenced immediately, even the skipper (Captain Nelson) manning a winch. The Himatangi more than fulfils what local residents expected of the boat and the throng of people who visited the wharf throughout the morning and afternoon wore all very much surprised .at the size of the vessel.' The Himatangi is by far the largest, boat that has visited Foxton and with hs c-argo of 300 tons, and neap tides very little difficulty was experienced in making the berthage. The bar presented no difficulty at all but the recent floods have altered the channel of the river somewhat anil until ibis defined again care will have to be exercised in negotiating the stretch of waterway between the wharf and the Heads.
The .boat Bounded its horn on rounding Robinson’s Bend and it was •■not long before a number of those interested .in the vessel’s arrival had gathered on the wharf, among whom was the Mayor (Mr. M. E. Pertreau). Hatches were removed, winches got under steam and the harrows were soon trundling their loads into the shed. By this evening the vessel will have been discharged of its cargo and loaded with a good cargo of hemp and general for Wellington, and on the night tide will leave Cor the southern port. Captain Nelson, who had the honour of bringing the vessel to the v. barf for the first time, is not altogether a stiranger to Foxton, having made several visits here as First Mate on the s.sr. Kennedy. .'The only local resident to be found among the crew is Mr. J. Hannah, of Thynne Street.
