SCHOOL SPORTS

MARTON VISITS FOXTON. Yesterday representatives of the Marton District High School visited Fox-ton for the purpose of competing with the local D.H. School on the field of sport. Football and basket ball matches were indulged in, the former resulting in a. draw, 6 points each, whilje Foxton lost the A basket ball match and won the B. Results are as follows: — BASKET BALL. Foxton A. v. Marton A. —This was an exc-elleut game. The passing was of a high order and the goalthrowing first-class oil the whole, although the local girls missed more than they should have in the first, few (minutes. However, they made amends later on and as first one team and then the other scored the excitement became intense. Rarely Ras such nil exciting game been seen in these parts. The ,Marton girls had fewer shots, bnitUhei aim of Miss Ngaire Ingle (an ex-Foxtonian) wa3 deadly, and quite on a par.with the redoubtable Jime Hobson, of Levin. At. half-time the score was I goals each, and in the second half I lie teams took turns in scoring, till S all was reached. ThenJlarton got ■I goals quickly to Foxton’s 1 and the game ended 12 —9 in favour of Marton. Miss Bindon refereed, and had a busy time as the'hall travelled up and down the field so quickly. Foxton was represented by Patience Booth, Elsie Rout, Noelene Brown, Melva Yorke, Ada. Roove, Margaret. Barron, Hope Thynne, Thymic, Jessie Crowe, and Greta Coley. Foxton B. v. Marton B. —Although -the play of these teams was not. up to the standard of the other galnie, it was nevertheless a game that (kept the spectators on their toes. Play was very even, and both teams gave a- good exhibition. One or two of the visiting defenders were a little sfmall for Foxton’s tall attackers, and that gave the local girls an advantage that enabled them to run out winners by a narrow .margin of 6 points to 4. Mr. Doel acted as referee.

The folowing represented Foxton .It. —Grace Reader, Decern a Brown, Eunice Lee, Dorothy Edmondson, Ivy Tollison, Rea Osborne, Mjeta Mason, Stella Baird, Audrey Barron FOOTBALL. Foxton won the toss and defended the western end. The local team pressed dangerously fo|r the first five minutes, Hirini and Dayey on the right being particularly dangerous. Marton soon settled down and for a while dominated the play through good combination between their fast backs. Golev at full-back, was ,i cliable and the first score by Marton owed much to the bounce of the ball. This score was followed after ten minutes by a second try by the visitors, credit being due to Marion’s first five-eighth for a splendid out ting-in movement. At this stage a marked improvement was observed in the play of the Foxton team. The forwards offered more opposition and- the combination between tlie hacks, both in attack and defence, showed better understanding. •Foxton scored a few minutes before the close of the first half, the movement originating from Hirini and culminating' in a fine solo effort by Davey, who scored well out. The kick failed and half time saw the sc-pre: Marton 6, Foxton 3. On resuming', Foxton took the initiative and play raged for a time in Marlon’s 25. Fluctuating play was a feature of the second half, after the first ten minutes, Foxton’s score resulting from a raid into Marion's 25 when a hard pressed Martonian, in his effort to clear, had his kick intercepted and touched down by Alexander. Foxton again failed to add the .major points. The closing stages of the game saw both teams battling for a decision but on each side the defence was sound and no further score resulted. Mr W. Neville ably controlled the game. Foxton was represented by the following:—Coley, Davey, Hirini, Mufrphy, Martin, D. lOhrystal], Perreau, Bloomfield, Cowley, J. Clirvstall, Parker, Mounsey, Croon, Alexander, Yorke. The visitors were entertained to afternoon tea after the matches, by the High School pupils. The Marton football captain thanked the local pupils on behalf of the visitors for the excellent games and afternoon tea. Mr F. A. Mason (Headmaster) replied and paid a tilbinte to the visitors for their sporting exhibitions and expressed has thanlks to Mi' Wilson (Headmaster of the Morion High School) for allowing the pupils to make the Hip to Foxion.
