THE PREFERENTIAL RAILWAY RATE.

DISCUSSED BY LEVIN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. The Levin Chamber of Commence discussed the preferential railway rate at present existing which has the effect of placing an imposition on goods through t'he local port at its meeting on Monday evening. Mr. S. R. Stedman stated that the object of the preferential tariff was to encourage shipping to use the.port of Wanganui; and it enabled the Feilding and Palmerston people to Obtain their goods as cheaply from Wanganui, if not more cheaply, than from Wellington. The grain rate from Eoxton and Wanganui, respectively, was on about a pro rata basis; the motor lorries could not touch that rate. Mr. E. S. Crisp said that the Eoxton request that Foxton be treated the same as Wanganui was not unreasonable, and that the Levin 'Chamber should support it, irrespective of its chances of being acceded to. Other members 'Concurred in this view, and considered that the Rnilway Department would not be detrimentally affected by granting the request. It was decided to comjmunicate with the Foxton Harbour Board, expressing the opinion that it had just cause for complaint, and hop*ing that its efforts to have the position rectified would -meet with success.
