EM DEN ARRIVES AT AUCKLAND.
DESIRE TO CEMENT GOOD FEELING. COURTESY CALLS. Auckland, June 25. W|ith the British flag flying proudly from her truck, and the ' new iron-crossed flag of Germany fluttering about her stern, the cruiser Emden entered the harbour at 8 a.m. and fired a salute which was replied to from the guns on North Head. Emden anchored in the stream. The German Consul for New Zealand (Mi-. W. Penseler) and the senior naval officer (Commander Clover), called on the Emden’s coimlinander, after which the Emden’s commander came ashore and called on Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle, Minister of Internal Affairs, representing the New Zealand Government. Other calls included visits to the Mayor, the ’ General Staff Officer (representing the Northern military command) and the chairman of [the Harbour Board. These -calls were returned, and the captain of the E-mden returned the call of the senior naval officer. In an interview with a, Star representative, tbe| .captain' of the Emden said: “We are doing our -best to cement good feelings between j our nation -and my country. So far as the war is concerned, we had to do our duty to our country, just ns your 'British officers did their duty to their country. Dming the war we fight, as every nation fights, for its rights and prestige, blit -after the .conflict surely we can be friends as we were before the war. Many German ships came to your country and trade relations were good. I hope that the visit of -the Emden will help to re-establish the old friendship which 'existed.” The treason for the cruise, Captain de la Periere said, was to give the 65 cadets on board a good view of the world and make good sailors of them. All the cadets served this way for one year.
