FURTHER EARTHQUAKES IN THE SOUTH ISLAND.

MOUNTAIN RENT IN TWAIN. FURTHER LOCAL SHOCKS ON SUNDAY. Although a week has now elapsed since the fiirst earthquake was felt throughout the Dominion, shakes are still being experienced in Nel-son-West Coast districts. Murchison and district was again badly shaken during Saturday night and Sunday causing the front of Hodgson’s store to collapse. Landslides and rumblings in the hills still continued. A special train was despatched from Nelson on Sunday to take over 100 refugees frolm the stricken area. The continued shocks, however, caused a subsidence in the raihVay line near Glen Glenhope and the refugees had to travel to IKohatu by car to pick up the train. Ten heavy shakes were experienced at Westport between noon and 7 p.m. on Sunday. A Corby Vale resident states that flames were Hying, caused by friction, as huge blocks of land went sliding down the hillside. Mr. Russell and his son are still missing from Mokikinui. Lorries have had to cart water to. the Westport inhabitants. At Karamea many eases of diphtheria ajre reported and Captain Burreil flew' over with serum on Sunday. Greymouth reports that shakes on Sunday were the worst experienced since the big shake last Monday weelk. An ex-Foxton resident now residing in Nelson speaking on the ‘phone from the South Island on Sunday night, stated that the shakes on 'Sunday were severely felt in Nelson. The continued shakes were having a very detrimental effect on the people who were unable to get any.proper rest at night. Two. shocks were felt locally early on 'Sunday morning, one at 3 am and the other at 6.10 a.m. Neither were very severe but of the undulating “back-wash” type . previously experienced.
