MAiNAWATU. The animal trial matches between the Horowhenua and Manawatu A and B representatives were played at Shannon on Saturday afternoon before a good crowd of spectators. The weather conditions were ideal but the ground was heavy. The 3 match was won by Manawatu, by 22 points to 9, due to Manawatu’s superior back combination. There was very little difference between the A teams and although the final scores were Manawatu 15 —-Horowhenua 14, a few more minutes play would undoubtedly have given Horowhenua the lead as they had Manawatu whipped but the dash come too late. In the opening stages Horowhenua dominated the play and several openings to score were thrown away. In the middle session Manawatu had all the best of it but at the conclusion Horowhenua came back with a series of dashing attacks which they continued till the call of time. The teams were as follow: — Manawatu: S. ißramwell, 'Strange, Fletcher, Eliott, !N. IBjramwell, (Heize, Thompson, Hutchison, C. Hight, Neild, Miles, McKenzie, Conrad (captain), Crawford, and Boldt. Horowhenua: Ryder, Robinson, Stevenson, Taylor, Graham, Bevan, W. Parata, Hakaraia, Pratt, McDonald, Satherley, Tatana (captain), Hanna, Dalzell and T. Parata. Referee: Mr. J. J. O’Connor.
The first, score came to Manawatu after being twice forced down. Thompson broke away from a linecut and passed to Hutchinson, who found the Hoirowlienua hacks out of position and scored under the posts after crossing wide out. Fletcher converted. Manawatu 5 Horowhenua nil. Horowhenua retaliated with a strong forward movement, which carried them to within sight of their objective. Manawatu were then penalised for playing offside, and Tatana kicked a good penalty goal. Manawatu 5 —Horowhenua. 3. Tatana booted Thompson’s pass to Heize downfield, bustled N. Bramwell and secured the ball to score a good try. His kick failed. Horowhenua 6 Manawatu 5. Thompson handed the ball to Heize, who dropped his pass, regained possession and changed the direction of the attack into his forwards. Conrad and Crawford handled before Hight received and scored a runaway try which Fletcher had no difficulty in converting. Manawatu 10 —Horowhenua 6 at halT-tijme.
Manawatu resumed aggressively, and passing among the backs had Horowhenua. in difficulties. N. Bramwell cut in prettily and sent the ball out to Mullins, from whom it went to Fletcher, who dropped his pass. A scrum soon after was the starting point of a bright Manawatu attack. Thompson, N. Bramwell, Mullins and Fletcher participated in sending Strange across wide out. Fletcher’s kick reached its objective. Manawatu 15 —Horowhenua 6. The Horowhenua team pulled themselves together, and resuming the supremacy they gave their opponents many anxious moments. Pfratt and Tatana bustled S. Bramwell, and had him worried when Fletcher flashed into the scene and kicked the ball out of touch in goal. Horowhenua worked their way back into the Manawatu quarter, W. Parata feeding Taylor, who passed Eliott and scored. Tatana converted. Manawatu 15--Horowhenua 11. Horowhenua were soon back in Manawatu’s quarter. W. Parata, Bevan, Graham, Stevenson and Taylor handled the ball in turn, the last-named being well taken by S. (Brajmwell. Fi*om the ensuing scramble Hanna secured and fell over the line in possession. Tatana’s .kick failed, Manawatu 15 — Horowhenua 14. With only a point difference between the two teams, play became keen and interesting. Good work by Stevenson threatened the Manawatu defence, but Strange succeeded in clearing. Ho-
rowhenue made a last effort bu victory was not to be theirs, Ste-
venson being pushed out of touch after a passing bout. SCHOOL MATCH.
