STORMY WEATHER.
♦ PALMERSTON VISITED BY TORNADO. A "whirlwind swept through Palmerston North yesterday afternoon unroofing many dwellings in its track. Fortunately the storm was confined to a, comparatively narrow track and in the space of a minute damage estimated to. run into thousands of pounds jwas done. The tornado struck the borough at Takaaro and swept from Boundary Road across Chelw’ood and Shamroclk ‘Streets to Burns Avenue and the corner of Lyndhurst and Main Streets. Half of the roof of Mr. Needham’s two-storeyed house in Kairanga Road was torn off. The roof of Mr. Ryan’s residence in C’hehvood Street was unroofed. Mr. Tlrott’s residence in Burns Avenue suffered a similar fate. Telephone wires were blown down and motor garages badly daanaged and in some cases wrecked. A Municipal ’bus was swept across the road and tiles ware torn off the roof of the Girls’ High School. Fortunately there were no fatalities.
