MAY GRADING RETURNS. The grading returns for hemp, tow, stripper tow and stripper slips for the month of May have been issued by the Department of Agriculture as follows: —■ Ports G.F. ELF. L.F. C. Chalmers ■ —‘73 2 Bluff 283 487 63 Lyttelton Forty-five bales at Auckland, 19 at Wellington, 80 at Foxton and four at the Plug were rejected. Four bales at Wellington were condemned. The number of bales in each grade was as follows, the number for the corresponding period of last year being 'given in parenthesis: — Good fair 360 (202), high fair 2846 (1521), low fair 2240 (1736), common 44G (749), rejected 148 (188), condemned 4 (16), a 'total of 6044 bales as against 4412 bales graded the same period last year, an intrfll&se of 1632 bales. The number of hales graded at each port was: —Auckland 1528, Wellington 1961, Foxton 1287, Picton 85, Dunedin 239, Pt. Chalmers .75, Bluff 837, Lyttelton 32. The following shows the detailed particulars of the tow graded:— Ports Ist 2nd 3rd Auckland 105 288 180 Wellington 15 478 88 Foxton 68 175 40 Pieton Bluff Lyttelton Dunedin Waikuiku • 156 Thirty-six bales a’t Auckland, and three at Wellington were condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: — Ist grade 188 (78), 2nd grade 1239 (535), 3rd grade 495 ( 737), condemned 39 (38), a total of 1961 bales as against 1388 bales graded the sarnie period last year, an increase of 573 bales. The number of Jbales graded at each port was: —'Auckland 609, Wellington 584, Foxton 283, Pioton 13, Bluff 306, Lyttelton 6, Dunedin 4, Waikulcu 156. Stripper tow: —Eight bales at Auckland and 30 at Foxton were graded 2nd grade. A total number of 38 bales as against 24 bales graded the same period last year, showing an inicrease of 14 bales. iStrippeu .slips:— Eighty-four bales at the Bluff were graded 3rd grade, a total number of 84 bales as against 231 bales graded the same period last year, a deerea** of 147 bales.
