Foxton 14, Shannon nil# ~ On Saturday, the first games in -the second round of -the senior championship table were played. The result is interesting, as four ■teams: Foxton, I W/:ttid|erers, (Hui Mai and Shannon have 7 points and Otaki is one point behind. -Shannon had a bye on Saturday, so have the advantage of four games to play to the other teams’ three. FOXTON MEETS WANDERERS. Foxton met Wanderers on the Levin Domain and the teams lined out as follows: Foxton (yellow and black) : Procter, Taylor, Robinson, Thompson, Stevenson, Moses, Baines, Woods, Andrew, Carter, Harrison. McGregor, Pine, Hindu, Huff. Wanderers (black): Ryder, J. Graham, McKenzie, Bryant, Nicholson, S. Graham, W. Parata, T. Paratta, Udy, Skelton, McDonald, Tatana, ifansfield, Knox, McDonnell.

From the kick-off, McKenzie made a good run for Wanderers. He also attempted a. drop but went wide and Hindu sent to touch. Pressing hard blacks sent T. Parata over from a scrum. Graham had a shot at goal but failed and eventually Procter and Tayloa* carried play up to within ten yards of blacks’ line. This was the first time the wasps -had got into blacks’ country. McDonnell sent thelm back to their twenty-five, but Taylor cleared well. Stevenson carried the attack on but Ryder stopped. Moses and Thompson returned to the black twenty-five and from a line-out Procter attempted a drop. Bryant cleared to touch. After exchange of kicks saw Taylor take the ball well and start off but McKenzie grassed him and Bryant seizing the leather scored between the posts. Tatana failed with the easy kick —Wanderers B—Foxton nil. Proeer, Foxton’s full hack, now had to leave the field and Hirini took his place. Wanderers were quickly in yellows’ twenty-five again and from a lineout, J. Graham obtained and sent W. Parata over, McDonald failing to convert —-Wanderers 11, Foxton nil. Foxton failed ito play its usual game, and handicapped by the sun and wind, it appealed as if an easy Wanderers’ victory was in sight. Blacks kept up the pressure and from a free kick for offside in the centre of the field, McKenzie placed -a beautiful shot between the posts. Unfortunately Udy was standing offside and the kick was not allowed. Up to half time, blacks were constantly in their opponents’ territory and the wasps were unable to sting. Blacks continued to press, but Hirini, Foxton’s full-back, was very safe. Play -was up and down for about 20 minutes with yellows playing a hap-hazard game but from a serum in Wanderers’ territory the ball went to Taylor, who scored on the corner, failing with the kick. Wanderers 11, Foxton 3. This seemed to give the necessary inpetus to the wasps, Who began to buzz and kept the crowd on its toes until the whistle went. Following up the last try, Moses passed -to Taylor, who ran down the fine eventually throwing inside to Robinson, who scored a try between the posAs —a brilliant effort. Taylor ronverted —Wanderers 11 —-Foxton 8. No further score was added. .Foxton was unfortunate in not converting two penalties, buit they deserved defeat for the exhibition put up in the first half. They -were tin-owing the ball about but the handling was not too good and on several occasions the ball reached Croon on the wing—lie was crowded out. On Saturday last the local school’s first fifteen played its first match away from home. On arrival at Ohau it was found that owing to the recent rains, the Ohau ground was unfit to play on, consequently the match -was tr-ajns-ferred to the Ivuku ground, which was no-t in the best of conditions. From the commencement of the game the play by 'both teams was loose, neither forwards packing too well, but Foxton managed .to keep the play witMn their .opponents’ half, and often within the twenty line. The Ohau backs were, however, in good defence form and it was Avhile Foxton was pressing that the ball was kicked into S. Taanahana’s hands (Ohau wing-three-quarter), and ke made an exhibition ran down the length of the field scoring near the side line. The ball was heavy, and the try was not converted. Ohau 3 —Foxton nil.

Shortly after the kick-off Foxton again pressed Ohau, and keeping the ball at their toe, Foxton forwards took it across the line, and Croon fell on it. The ball again proved 'to 'be too heavy for kicking. Foxton 3 —Ohou 3. Until half time the play was very even. 'Changing round, even play continued until Foxton forwards kicked the ball into the Ohau backs’ hands. Royal made a good run, sold the dummy, and succeeded in crossing the Foxton line. The kick failed. Ohau 6 —Foxton 3. The kick-off was followed by a forward rash by Foxton, and from a line-out the ball was given to N. Walls, who evened the score, the kick hitting the cross-ban’. Ohau 6 —-Foxt-on 6. Despite the enthusiastic support of the Ohau barraefcers, Foxton made the play very exciting with forward rashes, from one of which K. Coley managed to put Foxton in the lead. Foxton 9 —Ohau 6. There was now five minutes ito go, and both teams fought well for the honours. Eventually an unsu#cessful line kick by Foxton was picked up by Paipa (Ohau), who evened the honours. Foxton 9 —Ohau 9. Bob George held the whistle. At the reception held in the Ohau school, Mr. Procter on behalf of the visitors, thanked Mrs. Connor and the girls of the Ohau school for their efforts in providing the morning tea. The Foxton boys showed their appreciation in the usual manner. On behalf of the Ohau school Mi’. Connor (headmaster) voiced his appreciation of the splendid spirit in which the game was played, and hoped that the Ohau hoys would be able to make the gam© decisive when they visited Foxton. The reception closed with cheers for the girls who had assisted, and also for the visitors.
