THE CITY OF PALMERSTON

Under the terms of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1920, the Go-vernolr-General may from time to time proclaim any borough having a population of not less than 20,000 persons to be a city, such procialmation to be published in the New Zealand Gaxette. If the present steady population increase is maintained, the end of 1929 will see (Palmerston North take its official status as a -city and the Palimierston North Borough Council change its title to Palmerston North City Council. According to the figures of the Government Statistician (Mr. Malcolm Fraser), the population of the borough of Palmerston North, excluding the unban areas, was 19,775 on April 1. It is therefore safe to assume that the population at the present time is in advance of 19,800. According to the latest notification, the population of the borough, including the urban areas is 20,880.
