Robert William Lanier, the young American negro, wlm came to New Zealand in an endeavour to join Byrd’s Antarctic expedition, and was subsequently acquitted in the Auckland Supreme Court on a charge of stabbing the boatswain, was to have been deported by the steamer Golden Cross yesterday. However, it was later renoited that he had failed -to sail on the steamer. The Customs department is inquiring into the matter. The stopping of a lift between two {loots of a Wellington building the other day created some excitement for the occupants and the onlookers. An opening of about 18 inches on to the higher door was the irmly means of escape. There was nothing else for it bal. to clamber through. Assisted from both "the inside and outside the lift, several young women were the first to be “rescued,” and amid cheers made good their way to the upper floors via the stairs. After the lift, had been emptied of all save the attendant, who appeared to be prepared to go down.with the ship, the lift moved and ran smoothly to tlm next floor.
