OR. SMALL, a member of-‘the Kni- ' ranga County Council, should lie sure of his facts before/ making public comments in connection with the Foxton Harbour Board. He is reported to have stated a;t yesterday’s meeting of his Council: “That it appeared without the consent of the ratepayers the [Harbour] Board had purchased a. 35-year-old steamer' at a cost of solme thousands of pounds. No doubt the rate which it had struck was an aftermath of the transaction. He could not see any way in which the Board was a benefit to the county." , It may be mentioned, by the way, that Cr. Small was a candidate to represent this constituency in Parliament at last election. ■ Has reported statement re the Board’s purchase of a steamer is as ridiculous as it is untrue. The Board has no power to purchase a steamer. Probably lie is referring to the s.s. Kennedy, a vessel owned and controlled by a private ! company. His further comment “that lie could not see any way in which, the ■Board was a benefit to the county" indicates that lic 'is - completely out of touch with matters of .vital concern to the commercial fetid general prosperity of this district, per medium of -the port,
