FOXTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL REPORT
The following is the annual report. ofthe President of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce, which will be submitted to the annual meeting to be held in Ross’s rooms next Monday evening at 7.30 o'clock: —
“During the year the Chamber has considered various matters pertaining to the welfare of the town end district. It is pleasing to note that the Manawatu County Council is now pushing on with the work of tar-sealing the various main highways under its supervision and the Council must be congratulated on the fine subsidy obtained from the Highways Board and likewise on the capable manned* in which it is handling the work. It is also gratifying to learn that the County engineer has in hand the matter of preparing the Beach Road preparatory to tar sealing. The construction of the new Courthouse in Foxton is now almost finished. 'The building is of a very ornate design and an asset to the town. The Chamber may feel justly proud for having taken the initial steps in this matter and have to thank the'member for the district (Mr. J. Linklater, M.P.), and Mr. Rolleston (late Minister for Justice) for their, co-operation in this matter.
The possibility of the Foxton Harbour having to strike a rate in the near future was discussed by the Chamber during the year and while it is hoped that this step will not be necessary the (Chamber pledged itself to support the Board in any measure that would have the object of keeping the port of Foxton open and he the (means of in(leasing shipping through the port. In connection with the latter the Chamber has. placed on record tlfe services rendered the community by Messrs Linklater, Perreau, G. Eraser, F. C. Raikes and R. Rangiheuea in successfully canvassing the district for shares for the purchase of a boat for the Foxton trade. The question of Borough rating was given full consideration and a recommendation was passed on to the Foxton Borough Council that a revaluation of the whole Borough be made. This was agreed to by the local governing body and within the next few months it is hoped that the revaluation will be completed. At the (request of the Chamber the Minister for Defence visited the local beach for the purpose of considering the advisability of declaring- the old river bed an emergency 'landing ground and air port. Major Wilkes subsequently inspected the area on behalf of the New Zealand Air Force and submitted his report to the Minister hut as yet the Chamber has not received a definite reply to the recommendation.
The Chamber has also been alive to the fact that a chocolate factory is to be ei-ected in New Zealand and lias made representations to the officials concerned that the location of the structure’ should be Foxton. At the suggestion of the Chamber the Foxton Borough Council is now considering the question of the inauguration of a regular rubbish collection system.
The Levin-Alarton Tailway link has again been under discussion and the Chamber is now endeavouring to arrange a conference between the Marton, Foxton and Levin Clialmibers in this connection. The Minister for. Railways has already been written to and has replied that he will refer the matter to the Minister for Public Works for- consideration. The Chamber desires to thank the Borough Council for the careful consideration it has always given to 'matters placed before it by the Chamber and hopes that it wiil always have the co-operation of this body in any matter pertaining to the welfare of the town. Socially, the Chamber met on two occasions during the year, one being a ladies evening and the other on the occasion of the departure from Foxton of Mr. CL A.. Pearson, a Chamber member.
