HIGHWAY COMMUNICATION AND FLOODS.

IMPORTANCE OP SHANNON BRIDGE. THROUGH TRAFFIC ASSURED. HIGHWAYS BOARD SHOULD ASSIST. An interesting point in connection with the recent severe flood experienced in this district, was that eomjnuuiication between Fox-ton and Shannon was blocked for but a few hours, in marked contrast to conditions which have obtained in years past. To have this highway available during flood time is of the utmost importance to residents in this district and to the travelling public. Now that the new Shannon bridge is up it appears as if it will have to be a very (big flood that will block communication through the TWou ton. hut this will depend to a great extent, of course, on the ■state of the banks along the Manama tu throughout this area. It appears only reasonable that seeing that the Shannon road is a Main Highway that some assistance should be forthcoming from the Highways Board in this connection in order that this important ar-terial highway should he available in time of flood. The Foxton-Levin highway is still impassible owing to flood water hut this is draining off as fast as the flood gates will allow it to. The banks in the Moutoa. will require a good deal of attention as a result of the recent flood as they have given wav in one or two places where they were weak from the last flood.
