A charge of 'bigamy was preferred against Percy Clifford Smith, a labourer, in .the Palmerston Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning. It was alleged that, on December 19, 1928, being married to Emily Daisy Smith, lie went through a form of ■marriage at Levin with Myrtle Ivy Mudgway. Accused was remanded to appear at Levin on Friday. Prosecuted by the Auckland Education Board on a charge of upbraiding, insulting, and abusing Edwin lloss, a. school teacher at the Mataitai school, Auiekland, in the hearing of the pupils, J. R. M'Crae, a member of the School Comlmittee and a farmer, was hned £5 and costs by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. • The trouble arose over the blocking of a drain. It was stated that the accused used bad. language and struck! Ross in the face. An unusual method of deciding a by-election was adopted at Pukekohe in connection with the extraordinary vacancy on the Pukekohe Council. At the recent election only seven nominations were received for ike eight seats. When nominations for the vacant seat were called tnvo were received. To .save the hoard the expense of a byelection, the candidates agreed to submit their claims to arbitrators appointed by themselves. The two arbitrators in turn appointed an umpire. The claims were considered by this tribunal and one of the candidates was declared elected. A Wanganui motorist, driving t,° Okoia, had an exciting experience recently. When his car was passing through a mob of cattle a bull charged, narrowly missing the vehicle. The drover turned his dogs loose on the animal, with the result that he charged the drover’s

horse. Pandemonium reigned for a time as the dogs barked and the drover galloped about. Finally the bull’s attention cable back to the ear which, then clear of the other cattle, was able to speed up and leave the danger zone behind.
