FATAL MISTAKE

OLD MAN POISONED. Auckland, May 13. ■At an inquest on Richard O’Rourke, aged 70, a retired farmer, his landlady gave evidence that the deceased asked witness’s husband for a dose of castor oil. Witness said a bottle was placed on the table and later O’Rourke was heard crying and struggling in a lavatory. He was taken to hospital and died next morning. Witness said she had kept some acetic acid in a castor oil bottle for preserving herrings. Deceased had evidently taken the acid bv mistake. Witness said she threw the bottle over the Grafton Bridge as she Avas returning from the hospital. The Coroner returned a verdict of death due to poisoning by acetic acid, the occurrence ha\ r ing been accidental.
