THE TE HORO MURDER CHARGE.
MOTHER DECLARED INSANE. At the Palmerston North Supreme Court session on Tuesday, without retiring ’the jury returned a verdict in accordance with the evidence given by three medical practitioners in connection with the charge against Agnes Simpson Michel 1, of murdering her four-year-old child at Te Horo. The jury was called upon to decide whether accused was able to answer the charge and replied: We find accused insane so as to be unable to plead to the indictment. His Honour directed that accused be kept in strict custody at Porirua Mental Hospital until the pleasure of the Minister of .Justice is known. Medical evidence was given by Dr. Russell, deputy director general of mental hospitals, that accused was suffering acute melancholia and it was not desirable for her to appear in jCourt. The evidence of the other .doctors was then given that accused was insane and not responsible for her actions and the jury gave their verdict as above.
