Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, APRIL 18, 1929. MUNICIPAL ELECTION.

THERE are eleven nominations lor the nine positions on the Borough Council, which indicates that interest in local civic .affairs is not on the wane. Indeed, it is good to know that we have citizens in .our midst ready and willing to offer their services in the interest of the borough and to promote the well-being of the community. We do not believe that any of the candidates offering are actuated by other than the atbovetmentioned motives, whatever differ-

ences of opinion they may express on matters of administration. The endeavour to enter public life to gratify a .purely selfish ambition or for some other ulterior purpose is reprehensible and unpatriotic. Seven of the sitting councillors offer themselves for re-election, viz., Councillors Cowley, Lucirisky, Thompson, Ross, Rangiheuea, Rand and M. 11. Walker. It can be said with confidence that they have given of their best during their term of office, which should entitle them to a renewal of confidence. The two' retiring are 1 Councillors Parkin and Spring, and to them the thanks of the burgesses are due. Of the other candidates offering, Mr Barron has served on the School Committee and is a prominent and useful member of the local Chamber of Commerce; Mr Fred. Robinson, while making his first, entry into local body activities, is an enthusiastic member of local sports bodies, while Messrs Crowe and Chas. Hunt arc reputable residents of many years standing. The new aspirants to office will submit their views for consideration and en- . dorsement and the sitting Cound filers will likewise submit, a definite policy of works within the compass of the general revenue. If the incoming Council can work with the sfliinc team spirit and harmony as characterised the present Council, then the ratepayers will be well served during their term of office.

The Mayor has discharged his onerous duties with care and his reelection without opposition is a general testimony of satisfaction. While, at times, tilings have not gone altogether his way, he has bowed to the decision of the majority and lias worked at all tunics in the interest of the borough as a whole. Messrs Bryant and Perrcau will replace Messrs J. Chrystall and H. Berry as the borough representatives on the Foxton Harbour Board, and Mr Bryant lias been re-elected unopposed as Fox ton’s representative on the Horowlienua Electric Power Board.
