Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, APRIL 11, 1929. TOWN CLERK’S REVIEW.
WE desire to compliment the Town Clerk upon his instructive and illuminating .review of the Borough Council's activities and financial position appearing elsewhere in this issue, and which we,commend to the burgesses for careful perusal in view of the approaching municipal elections. The review indicates that the .Council, while not neglecting necessary .work, has succeeded in living within its means. The depression through which the borough has passed made it impossible for a number of people to meet their rate demands which restricted .the Council’s operations to a certain extent and in this connection a grealter burden is imposed upon those able to pay. 'This point should not be lost sight of by critics. ,On top of this, reduced valuations have still further curtailed income. A revaluation of the borough, however, will equalise matters in this direction. On the Whole, the outgoing Mayor and Council have discharged their duties with fairness and have wofiked harmoniously throughout, and are entitled to the thanks of the community.
