In my report submitted herewith on the estimated quantities of metal required for the coming year it will be noticed that it will be possible to put more me'tal on the riding roads than before, owing to the fact that sevei al miles of main highway are under construction and mil, therefore, relieve the maintenan'ce account. Main Highways construction : Hfeatangi-Rangiotu Road: A length of 60 chains between the Hilnatangi store and the railway crossing ,Ims been formed and metalled. The filling on the Bainesse deviation is progressing satisfactorily and also the deviation at peg 4m. 71 elms. A twe foot six inch filling has been made opposite the Rangiotu station and most of its surface has now been metalled. This filling mil now be left for consolidation for a few m'onths, When a further filling will be added to bring the new road up to the final levels which mil be approximately the level of the railway tracks. Owing to the shortage of metal trucks, both this and the wofik on the Foxton-Him aJtangi section are somewhat hampered, otherwise this work is progressing satisfactorily. The camp erected at Bainesse has proved quite a success and is now in full use. The t w ochains radius curve leading from Foxton Rd. wil'l be put in hand as soon as thepporerw r er poles are shifted. Himatangi-Foxton: This section has been formed and metalled for a distance of 3 miles 62 chains, [most of which has bee rolled and a fairly good surface has .been obtained. Side channels are being formed and concrete du!mps are to be put in to lead the surfaJee water into the culverts on the railway side. A stretch of. heavy filling is now in hand, but everything possible is being done to prevent inconvenience to traffic. The whole of this work has benefited by the recent rains. The old roadman’s cottage at Eimatangi is .in use as a camip for this construction gang. Terrace End pit: Only twenty trucks of metal are being loaded in.this pit daily owing to the shortage of trucks, otherwise everything is running smoothly and a contsant supply maintained. There is a possibility of getting a greater number of trucks in the near future.—Adopted. . INSPECTOR’S REPORT.
