The question of who won the war is answered by Cb lon el Lionel James, the. famous retired war correspondent, in the “Evening'Standard.” Colon ell James' says: “At the beginning of August, 1018, the-French Army was almost comjpletely exhausted as a* fighting force,- The Americans were a vigorous rabble and the British Army 'Was the only force that was a re'al' lighting instrument. Marshal Foch at his first 'meeting .with 'Sir Douglas Haig, after the Armistice said; ‘My dear Marshal, your wonderful ..army has saved France—saved us all. Without you we were beaten.’ A few days later, when the details were better known, . Marshal Foch, at the luncheon table at General Headquarters, said: ‘The battles of your British army will live for all. time as a classic as to how great military operations should be conducted. Nothing w'as ever seen like it in the history of all .wars.’ ”
