JERSEY CATTLE.
FIELD DAY AT MRS. SPEIRS’. One of the most successful field days held by the Horowhenua Jersey Breeders’ Club was that which took place on Wednesday last at Mrs. I. W. Spoil's’ Foxton Road. The attendance numbered about eighty, and fully a-quarter of those present were ladies. On the spa- ; eious lawn in front of the residence, seating had been arranged and. here luncheon was partaken of, after which Mr. R. W. Evans, president of the Club, explained the arrangements made for the occasion. He introduced Mr. T. RaniV.rd, of Whakaronga, who w'as to give a demonstration of the points of a Jersey cow, and stated that it had been intended to have lectures on grasses and manures by two experts from the Agricultural ‘Department, but unfortunately one of those officers was ill and the other was visiting North Taranaki. The demonstration of tripod harrowing and topdressing, which Messrs Booth, Macdonald and Co., Ltd., had proposed to give, had 'been postponed, and would take place on Messrs Vickers Bros.’ farm soon after the Easter holidays. At the 'conclusion of the main portion of the ddmonstration, a judging competition among ' the spectators was held. The winner was Mr. E. J. Field, who made the total points 80, the same number as the points independently allotted by the demonstrator. Mils. J. iW. Speirs was second with 791 points, Mr. R. IC. On the return to the homestead, afternoon tea proved a popular event. Mr. Evans moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Ranford for his noble and instructive address, and to Mr. and Mrs. Speirs for the use of their grounds and for the stock placed a!: the disposal of the club for demonstration.
