PASSING OF A PIONEER.
KANGITIKEI’S OLDEST RESIDENT. Marton, March 19. Believed to have been the oldest resident of the Rangitikei district, Mr. John Chisholm passed away in Hunterrille. The deceased gentleman was in his. 99th year, and until the illness to which he succumbed was hale and hearty, taking a keen interest in the affairs of the district. He was born in the township of Gordon in Scotland, where he was in the employ of the well-known Bruce family, who later came toNew Zealand and settled at “Glencairn,” near Marton. With his wife and young family Mi*. Chisholm also migrated to the Dominion, settling also at “Gleneairn.” Later he took up land near Hunterville, aud farmed it with success until he retired a fetw years ago. A member of that old school of iScots —the Bruces, the Sampsons, the MlcKelvies, the McKenzies and the Frasers —who did so much in the early settlement of Rangitikei, the late Mr. Chisholm was imbued with pioneering qualities to a remarkable degree. , His wife .predeceased him many years ago, but he is survived by three sons and one daughter —Messrs T. Chisholm, A. Chisholm, and J. (Chisholm, and Mrs. W. Fergusson, respectively, all of Hunterville. The (funeral was the largest ever held in the district. The pall-bearers were four grandsous—Mjessrs C. Chisholm, A. Chisholm, R. Fergasson and W. Fcrgusson. .
