Manawatu Herald TUESDAY, MARCH 19, 1929. A HARBOUR RATE.
THE proposal to levy a Harbour rate to produce £SOO to enable 1 lie Fox ton Harbour Board to meet- its financial obligations will be looked upon with alarm by Foxton ratepayers for the reason that Foxton ratepayers will be saddled with three-fourths of any rate struck. This proportion is, of course, inequitable but was entered into at a time when it was confidently thought that 'the revenue from shipping would be more than sufficient to meet the charges of the wharf purchase loan, etc., and, further, without such an undertaking the outside area would have been excluded the harbour district. The only alternative to the imposition of a rate is to induce a regular shipping service to the port. This, it appears, can only be accomplished by the purchase of a suitable isteamer and a thorough canvass is now being made in this connection. It it hoped that all who have the welfare of the port at heart will render [what assistance they can to meet the situation in a patriotic spirit.
