TANNER’S FERNERY.
A PUBLIC SPIRITED SETTLER. The delegates to the recent Hospital Boards’ Conference were delighted with a visit to Mr. Tanner’s beautifully laid-ou't grounds at Karere. The fernery, a roofed-in rockery, is in the form of a grotto, with trickling clear water feeding pools which are spanned [by cunningly devised steps and paths. The interior is lit with electricity and the coloured lights beneath the pools and in niches is entrancing. All varieties of ferns grow in profusion and the scene at night, is one not easily forgotten. Mr. Tanner throws his grounds open to the public at all times, but he makes a charge of six pence to enter the fernery, the whole of which lie hands over to district orphanages. The visitors were delighted with their visit and fittingly thanked and congratulated Mr. Tanner for his generosity and public spiritedness.
