DEFAULTING HUSBANDS.
A FLOGGING SUGGESTED. “We should catch some of these ‘roosters’ and wring their necks,” said a delegate at the Hospital Boards’ Conference, when it was discussing defaulting husbands and the burden of relief on the boards. The Otago Board put forward a remit urging the Government to defray the cost of bringing back such husbands to the Dominion and compelling them to support their legal dependants. Mr. Petherick (Wellington) : “What are you going t'o do with the men when you get them,? They could defy the authorities.” Voices: “Well, flog thetm,” The chairman (Mr. Wallace) said that the matter had been the subject of complaint on several occasions, but when such husbands were brought hack they might become burdens too. It had been suggested to him that they should be horsewhipped and released, but he did not know what effect that threat would have if it were carried out. The remit was carried.
