GUARANTEE FOR EGG PRODUCERS.
Christchurch, Last Night. Aiddressing the annual conference of the Now Zealand Poultry Association to-day, Hon. G. W. Forbes, Minister of Agriculture, stated it was the Government’s intention to extend the guarantee on the exportation of eggs to £IO,OOO. Last year the amount of the guarantee was £4OOO. Mr. Forbes said it was not a satisfactory business to supply the market with the aid of a Government guarantee. However, the industry was at present in its initial stages and it was the Government’s intention to continue with the subsidy for the current year when the export would probably be greater owing to increased production. The Government hoped, however, egg producers would not meet such an adverse market this year. Mr. Forbes made it clear the Government accepted no obligation or liability with regard to any year in future. With reference to wheat duties, Mr. Frobes said the present scale oif duties wtould be continued for the crops for which preparations were now being made. As to whether wheat growing should ibe assisted by protective duties or subsidies, the Governlment intended to go into the whole question.
