Tom lieeney, the NeW Zealand heavyweight, was again defeated on points by the Norwegian, Van Porat, in a ten-round bout at Chicago on Tuesday. The winner’s long- left kept Tom at bay, and in the last round badly damaged the New Zealander’s mouth.

Mr. J. Rankin, stock inspector, had an unpleasant experience while motoring through the Manawatu Gorge on his way to Palmerston North the other day. A stone dislodged from the hillside struck the ear and badly splintered the glass. Fortunately none of the broken pieces struck either the driver or Mrs. Rankin, who also was in the ear.

A fast trip by aeroplane from the Hofesonville aerodrome to Hastings in a Moth aeroplane was made the other day by Mr. T. E. Clark, of Auckland, whose daughter living at Hastings had become ill. The machine with Mr. Clark and a pilot left the aerodrome at 11.45 a.m. and arrived at Hastings at about 2.30 o’clock, thus making the trip of about 240 miles by air in two and three-quarter hours. The Shannon Dairy Company has just received from London a very handsojme bronze medal, enclosed in an elaborate case, Which avas won by this concern for a display of unsalted butter at the recent London Dairy Show. This show is the event of the year in the whole of the dairy world, and Shannon secured first award out of 61 competitors, thus adding another fine trophy to the many it has already annexed. The company is to (be congratulated on its win. Mr. J. Aim, the manager, ■is naturally proud of the success and the trophy just received. Representatives of the Manawatu and Rangitiked County Councils met at Sanson on Tuesday to discuss the position of the proposed reconstruction of the Bulls bridge, over the Eangitikei river. [Following a lengthy discussion it was unanimously resolved to recommend to the respective councils that they stand by their original offer to the Main Highways Board —namely, that the board contribute £4 to £1 and take over 80 per cent, of the councils’ liability on the existing .structure. At its meeting later in the day, the Manawatu County Council agreed to support its delegates’ recomjmendation.
