ROAD RECONSTRUCTION.

IN MANAWIATU COUNTY. The engineer (Mr. JET. V. Bond) reported as follows on the County’s main highways at Tuesday’s meet- . ing of the Manaiwatu County Council : MAIN HIGHWAYS. Foxton-Himatangi: The work on this section of 5 miles is progressing very satisfactorily, a distance of 2 imiles 28 chains having keen unetalled. The recent rain made it possible to consolidate nearly the whole length of anetal, which has now a fairly good running surface. During the present week line metal will .be spread over the surface for a wearing course. The water channel between the road and railway is now being formed. By the middle of this month the first half of this road Avail ibe completed, which will be up to schedule, viz., 2A miles in 21 anonths. liimatangi-'Rangiotu: During the Imohfch a foreman has been engaged and work on the re-construction of this highway commenced on March 1. Formation work has been completed for a distance of 30 chains, and 16 chains have been metalled between Himatangi corner and the railway crossing. The culvert pipes have been landed on the job. Three lorries have been engaged in metal carting and the automatic loader is being used for loading metal and is doing good work. A further four chains of heavy filling has been completed at- the Bainesse deviation. This work is ibeing earned out with scoop and .tractor which is also putting up a very creditable performance. The calrnp at Bainesse is now almost complete and will be available for occupation by the end of this week. A start will be made within the next day or two on the heavy filling at Rangiotu. Arrangements have been made with the district railway engineer to get the metal supplies for this road from the Terrace End pit in conjunction with the supplies for the FoxtonHimatangi road. 'The fence and trees have been cut back at Sorenson’s corner. The work on this road connot be pushed along as originally intended - owing to the Railway Department Ibeing unable to supply the necessary number of metal trucks. Ridings : —Awakou: Drains have been cleaned out on Bowe’s and Keri Keri roads. Maintenance has been carried out on Cemetery and Spring’s roads. Tramway: The maintenance gang has been engaged in weeding, relaying, replacing sleepers, and packing the track. — Received.
