SQUANDERS OTHER PEOPLE’S SAVINGS. Auckland, Last Night. Bartholomew Mcllroy, described as a( seaman and labourer, aged 21, was before Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., in the Police Court to-day, charged with the theft of a suit case valued at £4 ,and GOO ‘Cook’s dollar coupons, of a total value of £l4O, the property of a seaman, Herman Cronin. Mcllroy was also accused of ■the theft of a motor car valued at £350, two gramophones worth £23, an overcoat, and a gold Watch. He was also called upon to answer four charges of theft of P.O.S. Bank withdrawal slips and the theft of £475 in money. Mcllroy had been placed on probation three weeks ago. He went to stay at a hoarding house, Where Cronin stayed. He stole the 600 dollars also the bank notes and a bank book, drawing sums therefrom at close dates totalling £475. The watch and chain was stolen from a Union'eompany’s steamer in port. The motor car, which he hired, lie sold to a grocer at Wade for £foo cash. He lost all but £lB of this money at the l'aces. Within one month, hef squandered £7OO in gambling and racing and had no money left. On one of the four summary charges, accused was senten«ed to one year’s reformative detention and on the indictable charges, to which lie pleaded guilty, he was committed to the Supreme Court.
