MISAPPROPRIATIONS BY PUBLIC SERVANTS.
Hamilton, February 27. In the Supreme Court, two similar cases of public servants being accused of misappropriations were heard. Charles James, for failing to account for £251 to the Public Works Office, Taumarunui, was sentenced to reformative treatment not exceeding a year. Counsel pleaded for leniency, prisoner having made a clean breast of the affair. He had an aged mother to support and prisoner had offered to make restitution. 1 Mr. Justice Blair said he would like to admit prisoner to probation but there were too many such cases. In the second case, Colin Spalding Walker, lately assistant town clerk at Rotorua, was admitted to probation for three years under the usual -conditions and (paying- the costs of the prosecution. • The judge considered his case an exceptional one. The evidence showed the defalcations extended over only a short period. Walker had made a complete revelation of Hie. facts and apparently had acted under duress. 'Counsel had stated a woman had hlaekiniailed Walker, knowing him to be well connected.
