PILOT LARSEN ENTERTAINED

BY BEAICH RESIDENTS. Probably the most popular and best known personality at the local iSeaside is 'Captain Charles Larsen, the port pilot. His willingness to assist in any social function or to add to the enjoyment of jiolidaymalkers in other ways and his geInial ananner, is well-known. Apart from the social side he has done much in other directions to popularise the local seaside. Last night a large gathering entertained him at a social in the Beach Hall and he was made the recipient of several tangible expressions of appreciation. Mr. Whitehead (chairman of the Beach Ijmprovement Committee) presided, and presented Captain Larsen with a ease of pipes and a cheque from the Beach residents. Mrs. Te Aputa also made a presentation of a valuable Maori mat with which she decorated the recipient. Among those who paid tribute ,to the good work done by Captain Larsen were the Mayor (Mr. Perreau), H. Hartley, Thomas, and Constable Thompson (Marton). Captain Larsen was deeply touched by the kindly references of the speakers and sincerely thanked them for the tokens of appreciation. He said what he had done had been a pleasure and so long as he resided among them his services would ,be willingly given for their happiness and safety. A tasty supper was provided and an enjoyable time spent. Mr. Perreau made special reference to the handsome gift made 1 by Mrs. Aputa and referred to her generosity in connection with gifts of land to the borough and for educational purposes.
