It is said, remarked Mr. P. C. flay, engineer to the MarrawatuOroua River Board at last night's ■special meeting of the Foxton Borough Council, that a foot of peat will make an inch of soil. A fine specimen of a carved tobacco pipe of genuine Maori workmanship was knocked down in a Wellington auction-room the other day for 15/-. It was a bargain. There are plenty of carved pipes of allegedly Maori make to be picked up. Most of ’e|m were made in Birmingham. The genuine article is scarce, and worth money. Pipe-car-ving is becoming a lost Maori art. Fortunately there’s plenty of New Zealand tobacco, though! And its not only of extraordinary line 11avour, sweet cool and fragrant, but> unlike the foreign brands, is practically free from nicotine. That means that you can smoke it all day long and feel no ill-effects. This is partly owing to the soil in 'which 'the plants are grown, and partly to the toasting of the leaf which process not only helps largely to eliminate ■the nicotine but develops flavour and bouquet. There are several brands, special favourites being: “Riverhead Gold” (mild aromatic), “Cavendish” (a fine medium), “Navy 'Cut No. 3” (a delightful blend) and ‘lCnt No. 10” B'ullshqad, (a rich, dark, full-fla-voured variety).—Advt.
