ATHLETICS
MESS WILSON’S SPEED. For a girl athlete to ,win a 120yds. race from scratch in 13 3-ssec. is an outstanding achievement. It was done by Miss Wilson at Wellington on Saturday night. Miss Wilson was making her first appearance in Wellington since her return from the .Olympic Games, and that she picked up points while abroad she amply demonstrated. Her bursts of speed over the last part of a race were worth seeing. Miss Wilson won the last heat of the 120yds. in 14sec., and she had no trouble in doing that. With' a start of 12yds., Miss L. Hooper (Wellington) made the Gisborne girl g 8 all out in the final. At 60yds. Miss Wilson was •well placed, but from then on she made a bigger effort, and, maintaining a great dash, defeated Miss Hooper amidst much excitement by inches. “Isn’t she a flyer?” said someone. The remark was fully justified. Competing in the 100yds. ladies’ race earlier in the evening, Miss Wilson also showed fine speed. She Avon the first heat in 12 2-ssec., but in the final just failed to beat .Miss Hooper, who on this occasion was on the 10yds. marlk.
