POPULATION INCREASE.
TOTAL NOW 1,46.6,880. NUMBERS IN TWO ISLANDS. An increase of 10,790 in the population of the Dominion is shown by the Government Statistician’s estimate of the position at December 31. The total comprises 1,401,445 Europeans and 05,441 M aor i s - 1C increase in the number of Maoris is 752. Estimates are given of the population in the two islands, including Maoris, the latest figures comparing as follows with those published a year ago: 19281 1927 ,North Island 987,357 924,182 iSouth Island 529,529 525.932 Totals 1,466,880 1,450,114 A slight discrepancy appears in this comparison, as revision of (the 1927 figures led to a small /reduction in the total for the Dominion. An estimate is also given of the population of the Dominion, its dependencies and the mandated territory of Samoa, the total being 1,525,942, as against 1,507,967 a year ago. The additional 59,000 comprises 14,350 in the Cook and other Pacific Islands, as at September 30; the 1926 census of the Tokelau Islands, ,1033; and 43,650 in -Santoa, as at September 30. Following is a summary of the official estimates of the Dominion’s population, including Maoris, for the last .10 years, showing the increases from year to year:—
From 1919 to 1927, the aggregate increase was 232,909, an average of 26,613, so that the addition last year was 10,000 less than in the preceding years.
