TRIBUTE TO MR. COATES.
REGRET AT POLITICAL DOWNFALL.
In the first issue of “Te Reo o Aotearoa”' —the voice of Aotearoa, with which is incorporated Te Toa Takitini—Sir Apirana Ngata pays a tihute to the Rt. Hon. J. G. Ooates. Sir Apirana writes“ Amidst the natural rejoicing for the success of one’s party a note of regret arises for the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates’s downfall: It was Mr. Coates, during his regime as Native Minister, who carried through measures which are of the greatest benefit to the native race during the last few years. It was owing to him that the natives were granted compensation for the Rotorua lakes, and fishing rights'in Taupo, for Aorangi and Patutahi blocks, for lands wrongly confiscated and acquired by the Crown. He facilitated the consolidation scheme, gave relief to the natives in rates and survey lines, helped forward industrial enterprise among the Maoris and assisted materially in advancing Maori education, ethnology, and native crafts), in short, helped to conserve the race in the midst of pakehadom.”
“The future of our race,” continues Sir' Apirana, “is in the hands of the pakeha.”
