MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. The Alanawatu County Council met at Sanson on Tuesday, Cr. W. E. Barber (chairman) presiding. There were also (present: Crs. J. McKelvie, D. Reid, 11. H. Hunt, J. Boyce, and J. H. Perrett. CORRESPONDENCE. From Public Works department, directing attention to the slow expenditure of grants for main highways construction and urging every effort to accelerate progress by the employment, of all available teams and plant, as well as workmen who could be economically placed. —Received. From the Oroua Downs Drainage Board, advising that a sum of £l3O would be required to put the drains in good order. —Approved. GENERAL. The fee for sale yards registration in the county for the current year was reduced to £1 Is and for halls, 10/-. Mr. W. Berry was appointed Registrar of dogs and the fees for registration were fixed at 2/6 for sheep and cattle dogs and 10/- for all other dogs. TREASURERS REPORT.

The treasurer’s report on the county finances was as follows: County fund a/c. (dr.) £511'6 16s 3d; loan a/c. (edt.) £4340 2s sd; main highway loan a/c. (cdt.) £7O 15s Id. The riding accounts showed the following amounts available for expenditure: Sandon £ll4 16s; Mt. Stewart £69 9s lOd; Waitohi £3l 19s lOd; Rongotea £4l 7s 6d; Carnarvon £303 5s sd; Awaliou £2ll 16s 2d; over expended Kawa Kawa £l9l 19s 2d.—Received. RATE COLLECTOR’S REPORT. The rate collector. reported that during the month of January general rates paid amounted to £1998 Is 7d and there, was outstanding £2574 0s 7d. Arrears of general rates paid during the month totalled £B2 2s 4d. The 10 per cent, penalty would accrue on March 11.

TRAMWAY MANAGER’S REPORT The tramway manager submitted the following report: —The chief items of traffic for the month of January were: Grain 18 tons, minerals and manure 210£ tons, general merchandise 38£ tons, stock 76 trucks, metal 645 cubic yards, wool 254 bales, eggs 173 crates, timber 2,250 sup. feet. Fares amounted to £1 4s sd. The .accounts showed a debit balance of £lOl 11s 5d for the month’s working.

The running of the special works train between Longburn and Foxton for the delivery of metal on the Foxton-Himatangi road was working satisfactorily., Extra expenditure was incurred during the month in making the necessary arrangements, hut corresponding credits would be shown in next month’s accounts. —Received. RATE ROLL ALTERATIONS. Tthe following alterations were made on the rate roll: —C. E. Sanson to A. E. Mepham, section 149 Carnarvon; F. H. Landers to C. V. Ciochetto, secs. 122/5 Rongotea; A. Simonsen to F. H. Landers, section 147 Rongotea; A. G. Whitfield to Mrs. E. E. McLean, section 71 Tangimoana extension; W. A. Natzke and A. H. Weehsung to W. A. Natske, see. 202 Carnarvon and 357 Carnarvon. TRAFFIC INSPECTOR’S REPORT The traffic inspector (Mi*. W. Berry) submitted the following report: —4 have interviewed the owners of properties where trees are obscuring the view of motorists approaching at cross roads, and they are all willing to cut them back so as to give as clear a view as possible. I would suggest that the council consider \ the advisability of erecting the signs, as provided by the regulations under the Motor Vehicles Act, at the cross roads on the main highways. This would act as a warning to motorists to look out for traffic approaching from a side road or main road as the ease may be. Four persons were before the Court at Bulls on Saturday for breaches of the motor regulations, and fines ranging from 15/- to 30/- and costs were indicted. Since last council meeting, building permits to the value of £636 7s were applied for and fees amounting to £2 were collected. Fines amounted to £8 at the Bull’s ■Court. —Received. ENGINEER’S REPORT.

The acting-engineer, Mr. H. V. Bond, submitted the following report : —'Main highways construction. —Foxton-Himatangi Road: The formation and metalling of this road is progressing at a good pace. The sand formation is complete for a distance of 85 chains, and 75 chains have been metalled. Metal is being received from Terrace End at the rate of approximately 140 cubic yards per day. The roller is engaged on the consolidation of this metal. A pit has been constructed in a siding at Longburn for the metal train engine and a stapling shed is now being erected. HimatangiRangiotu Road: Instructions have just been received from the Main Highways Board to push on with this work as soon as possible. It will be necessary to erect a camp in the vicinity of Bainesse as the work will he spread over practically the whole 71 miles of road. It is my intention to transfer the construction gang from Mt. Stewart to this job. This will be a gradual process, covering a period of about two or three weeks. Hima-tangi-Sanson Road: The survey of this road has been eobrmenced and is being pushed ahead with all speed. Sanson-Bulls Road; The

plans for the construction of concrete bridges on this road are now lodged with the Main Highways Board. Main highways maintenance. — The usual grading and patching has been carried out on all main highways and the roller has been rolling on the Foxton Beach Road for two or three days. 1 . Riding maintenance. —The usual maintenance has been carried out and most metalled roads have been graded.
