THE HEMP MARKET.

JANUARY GRADING RETURNS. The Department of Agriculture has issued the -following returns in connection with the grading of hemp, tow, stripper tow and stripper slips in New Zealand during the -month of January:— HEMP. The detailed particulars of the hemp graded are as follows: —

Eight bales at .Pielon were graded super-fine, while 64 at Auckland, 302 at Wellington, 62 at Foxton and one at Bluff were rejected and 40 bales at Wellington Avere condemned. The number of bales in each grade was as folloAvs, the figures in parenthesis being those graded during the same month last year:— -Super-fine 8 (72), good fair 618 (595), high fair 3603 (2420), loav fair 2005 (3026), common 450 (679), rejected 429 (273), condemned 40 (8), ia total of 7053 bales as against 8073 graded last January, a decrease of 1020 bales. The number of bales graded at each port Avas as follows: —Auckland 1442, Wellington 3186, Foxton 1234, Pieton 88, Blenheim 171, Pt. Chalmers 73, Bluff 859. TOWI The particulars of the toAV graded

Thirty-nine bales at Auckland, 102 at Wellington, five at Pt. Chalmers and seven at Bluff were condemned. The number of bales in grade Avas The number of bales in each grade Avas as follows, the figures in parenthesis being the number graded during January, 1928: — First grade: 274 (372), 2nd grade 1141 (1221), ( 3rd -grade 541 (702), condemned 153 (77), a total of 2109 bales as against 2462 last January, a decrease of 353 bales. STRIPPER TOW. Fifty-four bales Avere graded Ist grade at Wellington, 26 at Auckland, 72 at Wellington and four at Foxton 2nd -grade, 27 at Auckland 3rd grade and four at Auckland were condemned, a total of 187 bales as against 80 graded in January last year, shoAving an increase of 107 bales. STRIPPER SLIPS. Eleven bales at Auckland and 85 at Bluff Avere graded 3rd grade and six at Auckland Avere condemned, a total of 102 as against 249 last January, a decrease of 147 bales.
