ELSIE WALKER’S DEATH

POSSIBLE CLUE TO MYSTERY. EARLY CALL FOR BENZINE. Hamilton, February 4. An incident which might throw some light on the mystery surrounding the death of Miss Elsie Walker occurred in Claudelands, Hamilton, on or about the morning of October 2. A car pulled up at the benzine station outside the store of Mr. J. Morris at the Five Gross Roads, Claudelands, at about 2 o’clock in the morning and called up the proprietor of the store, who lives in adjoining premises and requested a supply of benzine. Mr. Morris, who is an elderly man, supplied the benzine required. He did not note the make or the number of the ear, but thought the driver was an elderly man. Seated in the vehicle was a woman, who remained quite still while the benzine tank was being filled. There was no light near the petrol pump and a clear view of the occupants of the ear was not obtained. Mr. Morris’s store is situated on the north-east boundary of the Hamilton borough and is a mile or so away from the Main South Road, which passes through Hamilton on the western side of the Waikato River. It was not until after he had read the evidence at the inquest that it occurred to Mr. Morris that the car might be the one that was concerned in the tragedy. There has been a rumour current in the Waikato for some) time that a, ear answering the description of the vehicle in question had passed through Mataniata at midnight on the night that itlie car was missed from Papamoa.
